Voicemail, call answering or an AI receptionist?

Every small business misses calls. There are three common ways to handle them. Here's what each one does well, and where it falls short.

Voicemail

Free and simple. But many callers hang up rather than leave a message, and you have to listen to every one to find the real enquiries.

A call-answering service

A person answers in your business's name and takes a message. Callers like talking to a person. You usually pay per call or per minute, and messages are only as good as the notes taken.

An AI receptionist

It answers every call straight away, any time. It can ask the questions you choose, put callers through to the right person, and email you a tidy summary of genuine enquiries. It must tell callers it's an AI, and it can't handle everything a person can.

Which to choose

If you miss only a few calls, voicemail may be enough. If callers expect a person, a call-answering service suits you. If you miss many calls, want them put through to the right team, or want to see exactly how calls are handled, an AI receptionist is worth trying.
